Last year, General Motors ran a Super Bowl spot asserting that the Chevrolet Silverado is the only truck strong enough to survive an apocalypse.

Now, Ford Motor Co. is showing us what happens when its Lincoln MKZ encounters an "alpacalypse."

An alpacalypse, as millions of viewers will learn Sunday, is a peculiar event that occurs when you ask comedian Jimmy Fallon to make a Super Bowl commercial based on suggestions from Twitter. Fallon asked his followers to relay crazy road-trip experiences and got more than 6,000 responses, several of which were not obscene or offensive.

Then Ford, apparently unable to come up with a better idea in the meantime, filmed a commercial for the MKZ inspired by five tweets, including this one from "@karinarosewhite," a 17-year-old high-school senior: "We drove passed an alpaca farm, a few of them were meandering on the highway and my sister screamed, 'It's the Alpacalypse!'"

Lincoln's spot (see below or click here) also incorporates people's stories about turtles, a motorcycle gang, a spaceship and a German hitchhiker who was visiting Texas to study farming so he could return home and marry a farmer's daughter.

What does any of this have to do with Lincoln? Nothing, its executives admit.

Matt VanDyke, director of global Lincoln marketing, told Automotive News on Friday that the brand needed to take an unorthodox approach to "get Lincoln back on the radar."

"We feel like we do have to behave differently to get looked at, to get noticed," VanDyke said.

Lincoln embraced Twitter during the ad's creation to help make the brand feel "warm and human," he said. "We took calculated risk in not knowing exactly what we would get."

Asked if he is happy with how the ad turned out, VanDyke responded: "We're very happy with the amount of attention and the coverage and the amount Lincoln's been noticed since Dec. 3," when the campaign with Fallon began.

The plan originally called for one 60-second commercial during Sunday's game, but Lincoln executives ultimately decided to split that time into two spots: the alpaca-hitchhiker-spaceship thing and one that focuses on the actual, you know, car. The second one was conceived not by people on the Internet who've never been inside a Lincoln but by professional marketing people who get paid to do this sort of thing, which is a novel concept these days.

The company also changed its mind about putting Lincoln's new "brand ambassador," former NFL star Emmitt Smith, into the Super Bowl spots. Smith's voice has been relegated to an extended-cut version available only online.

Ford hopes its big-game spots for Lincoln will help get the brand on more people's shopping lists again, or at the very least remind people that Lincoln does still, in fact, exist. Lincoln aspires to one day get back into the same league as the dominant luxury players, such as BMW and Mercedes.

For its Super Bowl spot, Mercedes went a more traditional route: Hire a supermodel and show her in slow motion. A teaser video that Mercedes posted on YouTube starring Kate Upton in a black tank top got 5.7 million views in 10 days.

Ads and previews posted by Toyota, Audi and Volkswagen have been viewed more than 3 million times each.

In contrast, 21 videos posted by Lincoln about the making of its commercial have been viewed just 88,000 times.

Late Thursday, Lincoln posted a 90-second version of the final ad online -- and immediately began drawing ridicule.

It makes no sense at all," read one of the first comments posted. On Twitter, people labeled it "very, very weird," "all-over-the-place nonsense" and "the worst ad of the century."

"I am dismayed at the direction this relaunch is taking," Aaron Bragman, the Detroit bureau chief for Cars.com, told me in -- appropriately enough -- a direct message on Twitter. "The commercial is awful, confusing and nothing about it says luxury."

Give Lincoln credit for trying something different here, given that what it has done in recent years clearly hasn't worked. But the pregame reaction suggests that the first-ever Twitter-sourced Super Bowl ad is a disaster of alpacalyptic proportions.

In an early bid for Father of the Year, a Miami police detective allowed his 10-year-old daughter to use three drug-sniffing dogs and an ounce of cocaine for a science fair project.

Douglas Bartelt, a detective with the Miami-Dade Police Narcotics Bureau, provided his daughter, Emma, with three detector canines and 28 grams of cocaine (street value: approximately $1,300) for her entry into Coral Gables Preparatory Academy's annual science fair.

Not surprisingly, she won.

?The purpose for this scientific investigation was to find which dog would find the cocaine fastest using it?s [sic] sense of smell,? the fourth grader wrote in the abstract for her project, entitled "Drug Sniffing Dogs."

According to the Miami Herald, Bartelt, fellow detective William Pedraja and Sgt. Samantha Machado provided the dogs (a springer spaniel named Roger; Levi, a golden retriever; and Franky, a retired chocolate labrador) and the cocaine. (Franky showed he's still got the touch, locating the illegal substance in 43 seconds.)

Emma's mother, Michelle Bartelt, said the experiment was her daughter's idea, and that Emma was under constant supervision and "did not touch the cocaine."

?[Doug] handled the drugs,? she said. ?He?s always very meticulous about how he handles drugs.?

John Schuster, a spokesman for the school district, issued a statement saying the project, while unusual, did not violate any of the science fair's rules--and that cocaine is not a specifically banned substance.

?The student?s science project involved a very unusual set of circumstances, including having a parent who is a well-respected police detective with experience in training dogs that sniff for illegal substances," Schuster's statement read. "From our understanding, the parent was the only person involved in working directly with the dogs and the hidden substances, which took place at a police training facility.?

The first-place honor gave Emma an automatic entry into the Miami-Dade Elementary Schools Science Fair, where her drug-sniffing project earned an honorable mention.

American incomes rose in December by the most in eight years, a positive sign for consumer spending that could help the economy sustain momentum early this year.?

Personal income for Americans rose 2.6 percent last month, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. That was the biggest increase since December 2004 and well above analysts' expectations for a 0.8 percent gain.?

Personal income rose in November and December, the Commerce Department said, because of special dividends and accelerated bonuses to beat increases in taxes this year.?

The big rise in incomes suggests total consumer spending power entered the new year on stronger footing, even though much of the gains may not have been distributed evenly throughout the workforce.?

The economy faces the threat of across-the-board spending cuts scheduled for March, as well as the possibility the government might default later this later year and trigger another recession.?

After-tax income climbed 2.7 percent in December, the strongest since May 2008, while consumer spending rose 0.2 percent, just below the pace expected by analysts in a Reuters poll.?

Excluding the one-off factors that boosted incomes in December, after-tax income rose 0.4 percent.?

Glut of R-rated movies putting Box Office on overload

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Bullet to the Head," the guns-blazing, axe-swinging action film from Sylvester Stallone, arrives Friday and is the latest violent, R-rated movie to open in January. The month itself could be rated "R" - for Repetitious.

Nine of the 11 movies released widely since the start of the year and Friday are rated "R." Of last weekend's top 10 films, eight carried the restricted rating, which requires youngsters under 17 to be accompanied by an adult.

Hollywood distribution executives regularly maintain that variety in the marketplace --including films with a range of ratings - is essential to doing strong overall business. January, traditionally a slow box-office month, is running roughly 10 percent ahead of last year. But last week was the first week to be down from 2012, and it's possible the preponderance of R-rated offerings is taking a toll.

"There's been one PG-13 release this month - 'Mama' - and it went right to No. 1," Exhibitor Relations senior analyst Jeff Bock told TheWrap, "and I expect 'Warm Bodies' will do the same this weekend."

"Warm Bodies," which comes out Friday from Lionsgate, is a PG-13 teenage zombie romance based on a young adult novel. "There has to be a degree of pent-up demand from kids out there," Bock said.

It's violence more than sex that's driving the R-rated trend. Two of the nine releases --"Texas Chainsaw" and "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" - were 3D gore fests. Three - "Parker," "Broken City" and "Gangster Squad" - were crime dramas. Two - "The Last Stand" and Warner Bros.' "Bullet to the Head" - are action films, and two were comedies: "The Haunted House" and "Movie 43."

Several R-rated films have scored at the box office this month. Best Picture Oscar nominees "Zero Dark Thirty," "Django" and "Silver Linings Playbook" over performed. "Texas Chainsaw" and "Hansel and Gretel" both went to the head of the class with openings in the $20 million range.

But too many movies of the same sort can leave some demographic groups underserved, as well as limit a film's playability. For example, there's a good chance MGM and Paramount's action fantasy "Hansel and Gretel" might have done better had teenagers been able to get in without bringing an adult.

"With some films," explained distribution chief Don Harris of Paramount of "Hansel and Gretel," "you really don't have a choice. From the time it was conceived, this one was going to be an R-rated movie and there was no amount of editing or tweaking that was going to change that."

Harris noted that of the top four comedies released last year, three - Universal's "Ted" and "This Is 40," and Warner Bros.' "The Campaign" - were rated R.

"That is clearly a developing genre," Harris said, "with a high ceiling." Exhibit A might be "Ted," which has taken in $515 million worldwide, with nearly $300 million coming from overseas.

The other top comedy, "Parental Guidance" from Fox, has very much benefited from its PG rating. "We were the only true family movie in the market place for weeks, and it paid off," Fox distribution chief Chris Aronson said. "Parental Guidance" has taken in about $70 million since opening on Christmas Day.

The trend won't end any time soon. After this Super Bowl weekend, both of the following week's wide releases - the Universal comedy "Identity Thief" and the Open Road Films crime drama "Side Effects" - are rated R.

It won't be until Valentine's Day that things will change. On that Thursday, the PG-13 Warner Bros. drama "Beautiful Creatures," the PG-13 Relativity romance "Safe Haven" and the Weinstein Company's PG animated film "Escape From Planet Earth" will all hit theaters. The latter will be the first kids film to hit the marketplace since Disney re-released "Monsters Inc." in December.

But those who like their film mayhem full-on needn't despair. Fox's Bruce Willis action film "A Good Day to Die Hard" opens that day, too. And it's rated R.

Rats, like humans, return to drinking once punishment is removed

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Once heavy drinking impairs function, a variety of punishment-related threats may motivate people to stop drinking: spouses may threaten divorce, employers may threaten job loss, and courts threaten drunk drivers with losing their driver's license or incarceration. In the face of these threats, many alcohol abusers refrain from drinking, but relapse is very common when the threats of punishment fade, particularly when exposed to alcohol-associated environments (contexts).

A new study by researchers at the National Institute on Drug Abuse suggests that rats may behave in the same way. This is important because a significant amount of addiction research is performed in animals, using models of addiction, before it is translated to work in humans.

"The better our animal models fit human alcoholism, the more our animal research will help us to understand the complexity of the human disorder and to develop new treatments," commented Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry.

Currently, the most commonly employed techniques to achieve alcohol abstinence in animal work are forced abstinence and/or extinction training, where a lever press that used to consistently deliver alcohol no longer does so. These models of relapse are limited because they do not incorporate behaviors that mimic a human's desire to avoid negative consequences of drinking.

To address this divergence between animal models and the human condition, Nathan Marchant and colleagues developed a rat relapse model in which voluntary alcohol intake is suppressed by punishment in an environment that is different from the original alcohol intake environment.

They showed that when rats were re-exposed to the original alcohol self-administration environment, after suppression of alcohol intake in a different environment by punishment, they immediately relapsed to alcohol seeking.

"A potential clinical implication of this preclinical finding is that abstinence induced by introducing adverse consequences on alcohol intake in inpatient treatment clinics would have a limited effect on subsequent alcohol use in the home environment after completion of treatment," commented Marchant.

As with nearly all such scientific work, the findings themselves are interesting, but they also lead to many more questions. What is the potential influence of medication or other manipulations on this model? Would the model hold up when other drugs of abuse or even food were studied? Does the passage of time have any effect on this model? More work will be undertaken to answer these and other related questions.
