Feds: Many causes for dramatic bee disappearance

A new federal report blames a combination of problems for a mysterious and dramatic disappearance of U.S. honeybees since 2006.

The factors cited include a parasitic mite, multiple viruses, bacteria, poor nutrition and pesticides.

Experts say having so many causes makes it harder to do something about what's called colony collapse disorder. The disorder has caused as much as one-third of the nation's bees to just disappear over the winter each year since 2006.

The report was issued Thursday by the Agriculture Department and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Intel Iris: Integrated Graphics Are Finally Awesome

Intel's integrated graphics have taken plenty of heat over the years, and most of it deserved. But the climb to respectability that started back with Sandy Bridge is about to get a turboboost. Meet Iris, the biggest generation jump in Intel's integrated graphics to date. Get ready to game.

Intel's Iris graphics are going to provide a 2x improvement to 3D performance over Intel's current HD 3000, and HD 4000 that are wrapped into Ivy Bridge cores. Basically, games that would crawl, stutter, or not run at all on older boxes (like your Call of Dutys and Bioshock Infinites) are going to be up for grabs once ultrabooks with Haswell start rolling out.

Iris will come in two flavors: Intel Iris Graphics 5100, which you'll find on the Intel 4th Gen Core i7-4000U series for ultrabooks, and Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200 which will be making its appearance on H and R-series chips that'll be packed into beefier laptops and all-in-one desktops respectively. So your ultrabooks are going to be up to gaming snuff (if you're down with sacrificing some of the crazier settings), but your more serious (and less portable) machines are going to get an even bigger boost.

Intel's boasting that 2x performance increase across the board from ultrabooks on up, and three times the processing power for all-in-ones with R-series chips and eDRAM high-speed memory. And of course, all this comes with support for things like OpenCL, DX11.1, OpenGL4.1, three-screen collage display and 4K UltraHD display resolution. Or in layman's terms: those games that are coming out now? Yeah, you'll be able to play them right out of the box, and with a decent chunk of the fancy settings turned on to boot.

Intel's Core 2 Duos were a big deal going to Sandy Bridge, and the move to Ivy Bridge brought even bigger graphic gains. And now with Iris, we're seeing the biggest generational gain ever, with increases on the order of 50 times compared to the Sandy Bridge cores we had two years ago.

And all this is just gravy compared to Haswell's big power-efficiency push. The new generation promises advancements that could allow for things like 24 hours of laptop usage on a single charge. But for the moment, Intel is playing those particular cards a little closer to its chest.

In the meantime, these beefed up graphics specs are icing on the cake. Sure, integrated graphics on an ultrabook aren't going to rival a dedicated gaming setup with discrete graphics, but this is a huge push forward that will finally let us leave Ivy Bridge's aging built-in graphics capability behind and hope into the modern gaming fray with nothing but our integrated graphics. We can't wait to see how these benchmarks hold up in the wild once these things get out there, but this is looking killer for what it is.

Calif. woman accused of tainting O.J. at Starbucks

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A California woman faces attempted murder charges after police say she tried to sneak orange juice bottles spiked with a lethal amount of rubbing alcohol inside a Starbucks.

San Jose Police arrested Ramineh Behbehanian, 50, late Monday. A customer reported seeing the woman take two bottles of orange juice from her bag and place them in an open-air refrigerated display case at a Starbucks in San Jose around 3:45 p.m., Sgt. Jason Dwyer said Tuesday.

When the customer told a store manager what he saw, Behbehanian fled. A store employee followed Behbehanian to the parking lot and jotted down her license plate number as she drove off. Other employees called 911 after noticing the bottles had a toxic smell, Dwyer said.

Firefighters on the scene tested the contents and determined that the bottles contained a "lethal quantity" of isopropyl rubbing alcohol mixed with the juice, Dwyer said.

No one drank from the bottles, said Dwyer, who praised the customer's quick actions.

"This person was heads-up enough and reported suspicious activity," Dwyer said. "I think that person saved lives by doing that."

Officers tracked down Behbehanian Monday night at her San Jose home located about five miles away from the store. She was placed into custody on suspicion of attempted murder and felony poisoning, Dwyer said.

Police are still looking for a motive.

"We don't know if she has done this before or if she had plans to do this again," Dwyer said. "We have no reason to believe that there are other coffee shops with similar dangers."

Dwyer declined to say how much rubbing alcohol was actually in the bottles, but he said it was sufficient for police to charge Behbehanian with attempted murder.

The Starbucks store in San Jose was closed after Monday's incident but reopened the next morning, Starbucks spokesman Zack Hutson said Tuesday.

"We're immensely grateful to the vigilant customer who immediately did the right thing by notifying our store partners who immediately pulled the juice from the shelves and quickly notified the authorities," Hutson said.

As a precaution, Hutson said that the Starbucks store in San Jose pulled all of its remaining juices from the open-air refrigerator and destroyed them. Other Starbucks nearby were also alerted and told to check all their juice bottles to make sure none of its seals were broken.

Behbehanian could make her first appearance in court as soon as Thursday, authorities said.

The system is called Seat-to-Seat Delivery and it works via a touchscreen attached to the seat in front of you. If you spot someone that gives you butterflies, select their seat and buy them a drink or something to eat. You can even do it anonymously if your nerve fails.

Nothing says imminent entry into the Mile High Club like a stale turkey sandwich and a tiny vodka tonic.

GU, second in the West Coast Conference Championships for the second time in three years, received an at-large invitation to the 72-team field and was assigned the No. 16 seed in the 24-team Central Regional hosted by Oklahoma May?9-11.

Nationally 10th-ranked Washington will be the No. 4 seed in the Central Regional. It is the 20th NCAA appearance for the Huskies, who finished second or better in 11 tournaments this season, including runner-up in the Pac-12 Championships??

Led by freshman Cooper Wright from Moscow, Idaho, Community Colleges of Spokane wrapped up the NWAACC regular-season championship by capturing the snow-plagued Neutral Site Invitational in Cle Elum, Wash. CCS outscored runner-up Green River?293-302.

Wright shot a 5-under-par 67 during Sunday?s blustery round and was declared the champion when snow wiped out Monday?s round. It is his first collegiate medalist?honor.

CCShas won 14 straight tournaments, including eight this?season.

? Washington?s Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) is tied for third at 4-under 72 after the first round of the Pac-12 Championships in Los?Angeles.

The Huskies are third at 709, 14 shots back of leader?Cal.

Washington State is 12th at?755.

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Alex Steen stole the puck from goalie Jonathan Quick behind the net and scored a short-handed goal to give the St. Louis Blues a 2-1 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.

Steen scored unassisted on a backhander at 13:26 of overtime less than a minute after Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk was whistled for a double-minor high sticking when he cut Dustin Penner.

Steen also scored on a power play in the first period for the Blues, who ended an eight-game losing streak against the team that swept them in the second round last spring.

Quick, last year's Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP, made 35 saves in regulation, keeping the Kings in it for Justin Williams' tying goal with 31.6 seconds left.

Merck, Pfizer to jointly develop diabetes drug

(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc and Merck & Co Inc said they will co-develop Pfizer's experimental type 2 diabetes drug ertugliflozin, both as a standalone product and in combination with other drugs, including Merck's blockbuster Januvia.

The Pfizer medicine belongs to a new class of diabetes treatments called SGLT2 inhibitors. Now nearing Phase III late-stage trials, it is behind similar drugs in development -- including Johnson & Johnson's Invokana (canagliflozin) which was approved by U.S. regulators in late March.

Under their partnership, Merck and Pfizer will collaborate on development and marketing of ertugliflozin as well as on tablets that pair it with Januvia and the widely used oral treatment metformin.

Januvia is the leading member of another class of diabetes drugs called DPP-4 inhibitors. It is also sold in combination with another type of drug called metformin, under the brand name Janumet. The Januvia/Janumet tablets have annual sales of $5.75 billion, making them Merck's biggest products.

Richard Purkiss, an analyst with Atlantic Equities, said little is yet known about the Pfizer drug, but he said both companies stand to gain by developing it together.

"If you add Pfizer's drug to Januvia -- Merck's leading DPP4-inhibitor -- that would extend the Januvia franchise even further and help Merck," Purkiss said.

"And the beauty of this from Pfizer's perspective is they will be piggybacking on Merck's (Januvia) franchise and are also getting a contribution from Merck for the Phase 3 program," Purkiss said.

Pfizer has so far received $60 million in upfront and milestone payments from Merck under the ertugliflozin partnership and will be eligible for additional payments associated with clinical, regulatory and commercial milestones.

Merck and Pfizer will share potential revenue and certain costs on a 60/40 percent basis, the U.S. companies said.

Merck will continue to retain the rights to its existing portfolio of Januvia-containing products.

Purkiss said it was too early to speculate on potential sales of ertugliflozin, and whether it has blockbuster potential, because analysts have not yet seen clinical data from its trials.

Shares of Merck were up 0.36 percent, while Pfizer's rose 1.5 percent, both in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange, amid a 1 percent gain for the ARCA Pharmaceutical Index of large U.S. and European drugmakers.
