Twitter Unlinks From LinkedIn

Social media addicts may be dismayed to learn today that Twitter updates will no longer automatically sync with LinkedIn accounts. In a blog post earlier today, Ryan Roslansky, Head of Content Products at LinkedIn, noted that as part of Twitter?s ?evolving platform efforts,? tweets will no longer be displayed on LinkedIn. The change ends a two-and-a-half-year partnership between the two companies and marks a larger shift by Twitter away from third party applications. Previously, users could opt to have all tweets, or just those?tagged with the hashtag #in or #li, flow directly onto their LinkedIn profile pages.

Earlier this afternoon, Michael Sippey, who runs the consumer product team at Twitter, took to Twitter?s announcements page to post a note regarding Twitter?s ongoing changes. In his post, he outlined the company?s desire to ?build engaging experiences into Twitter? and allow ?developers to be able to build applications that run within Tweets.? In other words, Twitter wants to be the story, not just the headline. LinkedIn?s Roslansky followed up with a post of his own, outlining the effect on LinkedIn.

The move seems to be Twitter?s latest effort to get users to stick around, rather than using Twitter merely as a portal to content elsewhere on the web. Originally a text-only service, Twitter has evolved to allow users to embed video and photo content from various sites around the web. Twitter?s latest implementation, called Twitter Cards, will display headlines, photos, bylines and teaser blurbs for articles and other content around the web.

Not all developers are happy, and many see this as the latest change from a company that already has a shaky history with third party applications. As one such developer, Aaron White, wrote today, ?I?m done developing for Twitter?They?ve demonstrated not once to me, but twice, that they have no desire to work with developers, but rather?antagonize?them as they see fit.?

So what?s a LinkedIn user to do? Not content to sit idly by while Twitter changes the rules of the game, Roslansky and LinkedIn suggest that users shift their order of operations. The post on LinkedIn?s blog, as well as an email blast to LinkedIn users, advocated starting conversations on LinkedIn and syndicating them to Twitter, rather than vice versa.

?Moving forward, you will still be able to share your updates with your Twitter audience by posting them on LinkedIn,? he wrote, in a deft attempt to shift the conversation.

Whether users will follow instructions remains to be seen.

A representative from LinkedIn had no comment, other than what was posted to the company?s blog. A call to Twitter was not immediately returned.

Parks and Recreation Sponsors Strong Baseball Program

The core of coaches and managers dedicated to the continued vitality of baseball in New Britain has long used a triple-tiered Hartford-based association as a lifeline to the future.

The New Britain Parks and Recreation Department sponsors teams in each of the divisions within what is now called the Farmington Bank/Vantis Life Baseball League. For 60 years from its inception in 1946, it came to be known as the Jaycee-Courant League and subsequently received sponsorship from TD Banknorth before the current arrangement took shape.

Randy Brochu manages the team in the Senior Division. The Junior Division manager is Dom Paventi and Justin Dorsey guides the youngest group in the Prep Division.

Brochu, a New Britain High graduate and currently a full-time member of Sacred Heart University?s sports information team, identifies the camaraderie between the teams, values the relationship with the American Legion program and above all stresses on-the-field solutions to life?s intricacies in the inner city.

?In an urban community, there?s a lot going on with these kids? lives,? Brochu said. ?Growing up can be a lot more challenging. We want them, at least for the summer, to be part of a family. They have a responsibility to the family and we have a responsibility to them.?

The links between the league, the Legion and the high school team have never been stronger. Mike Torres and his son Tommy continue to operate the New Britain Stingers, which have representatives in the Legion and the Greater Hartford Twilight League. NBHS coach Roberto Mercado and Brochu, 31, are close friends since their playing days.

Rifts had developed between the three factions a generation ago, impeding the progress of baseball in the city, but Brochu said any impediments have been relegated to the pages of history.

?We?ve never felt there was controversy with the Legion,? he said. ?We want any player to go as far as he can and play at the highest level possible. We root for the Legion, the Legion roots for us. We?re one big New Britain baseball family. We just want kids to play the right way. The New Britain baseball family is first.?

Brochu has priorities for his players in a definite order.

?I tell our team that we have three goals,? he said. ?Number one is to come to the ballpark every day and have fun. Number two is to get better, get as well-prepared for the season as you can. Number three is to win ballgames and ultimately a league championship.

?But you have to be having fun and working hard to get better as players and people. Take the lessons of baseball and apply them as members of the New Britain community.?

The relationship with the NB Parks and Recreation Department also features the kind of synergy that powers successful ventures.

?They?re wonderful sponsors. They do a lot to make sure the kids have a great experience,? Brochu said. ?We?re so proud to have that great partnership right in our name.?

Most of Brochu?s Senior Division starters mirror what Mercado?s lineup will resemble next spring. Catcher Kevin Dukes continues to draw rave reviews after a solid season starting for the Hurricanes as a sophomore. Miguel Ortiz Jr. is the consummate center fielder/leadoff hitter. Roderick Green is doing some pitching, serving as an extra hitter and playing some first base.

Pitcher Bobby Turka, who just graduated from NBHS, provides Brochu with a blueprint for what his program is all about.

?He came to us undersized and quiet and is leaving after four summers as a guy that pitched well for [NBHS], earned scholarships and is going on to college [DeSales University] as a great representative of New Britain. We?re ecstatic to have him be a leader and get across to the younger guys what it means to be a New Britain baseball player,? Brochu said.

Infielder Manny Gonzalez falls into a similar category. He was cut from the NBHS team three times before making it as a senior and he relishes his role, no matter how the coaching staff defines it.

?Whatever he does, he gets in there and never complains,? Brochu said. ?He?s the epitome of what we?re about.?

The team also offers summer homes for those who attended other high schools but live in the city. Eddie Kieltyka and Sean Carroll played scholastically at Xavier, but have been vital to Brochu?s squad. Kieltyka, playing shortstop competitively for the first time, will play ball next year at St. Joseph?s College in Maine.

?He?s a true ballplayer,? Brochu said. ?He approaches the this team like he?s a 15-year-old trying to make the team, not a high school star going on to play in college. He?s a great example for the younger guys.?

Carroll is part of a deep pitching staff that also includes Danny Annear, Malcolm McLeod and Sunday Okoro Jr. Brochu said starting third baseman Julio Jimenez is emerging as a future leader. Starting left fielder and number two hitter Tony Labas has impressed the coaching staff with his scrappy approach. Juaniel Santiago is a gifted defender at second base and is working hard to refine his offensive skills.

Other players on the team are: Tyler Gamber, Rafael Gonzalez, Hugh Crundwell, Kevin Fazio, Chase Morales, Mark Santiago, Tony Taradeina and Brandon Saucier. Brochu?s coaching staff includes Ray Arroyo, Dave Lazicki, Frankie Camacho, Robbie Kilduff and two well-known war horses ? retired school superintendent Ron Jakobowski and venerable scorekeeper

Xbox Music is coming to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, that much we know. We also know that the Zune brand is dead. But whether the new service will be a simple rebadge or an entirely new beast remains a mystery. Bloomberg has it on good authority, however, that that Xbox Music will more than just a new face. Microsoft is allegedly combining all the most successful elements of its competitors -- streaming, online storage, and offline syncing -- into a product that will put iTunes, Spotify and Google Play squarely in its crosshairs. The company is allegedly in talks with the record labels to secure the necessary rights for a monthly subscription service and a market for purchasing tracks. It will also take a page from Google Music and allow customers to upload their own collections. If Microsoft can pull off a such a comprehensive service others in the field better watch out -- few companies have the reach or budget of Redmond.

I often hear from people who are concerned that they are going to have challenges on the Medifast diet. They will often tell me that they don?t have any willpower. Or they will say that previous diets haven?t worked. They will tell me that they are confused about how the diet works or when and how they are supposed to eat. Common comments are things like: ?I have some friends who have had good results on Medifast, but I?m worried that it will be too hard or too confusing for me. I have tried many diets and I have failed at them all. I usually start out OK but then I get overwhelmed at keeping track of everything or I get bored. Is this diet a huge challenge?? PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? Two high-definition cameras began streaming live video Wednesday of clown-like Atlantic puffins waddling, preening and nesting on a remote Maine island.

The National Audubon Society and explore.org teamed up to stream video from Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge to anyone with an Internet connection. Located about 20 miles offshore, the island has the largest puffin colony in the U.S.

The video marks the first time high-definition cameras have been used in North America to stream video of Atlantic puffins, said Steve Kress, director of Audubon's seabird restoration program.

One camera shows puffins and other seabirds on the island's rocky ledges, flapping their wings and coming and going while waves crash on shore. The other camera is underground, inside a burrow showing a puffin in her nesting site. It is so close to the bird you can look into its eye.

The goal is to engage the public and spur interest in seabird restoration, said Kress, who has worked with puffins for nearly four decades.

"About a third of all seabird species in the world are threatened with extinction," Kress said. "It's the most troubled group of birds in the world. And the puffin is the bird among seabirds that people can relate to."

The Atlantic puffin is sometimes called the "clown of the sea" with its colorful striped beak, its diminutive stature and the comical way it waddles.

The birds live across a vast expanse of the North Atlantic from Maine to northern Russia, but they almost disappeared from Maine when settlers hunted them to near-extinction for food and feathers in the 1800s. By 1900, only small numbers of puffins nested on just two Maine islands.

Kress has been working to restore puffin and other seabird populations to Maine's islands since 1973, when he founded the Project Puffin restoration project.

Today, puffins breed on five Maine islands, with Seal Island having the largest population, about 550 pairs. The birds arrive each April and leave in August, spending the rest of their lives at sea.

Scientists count 3 million to 4 million pairs of Atlantic puffins worldwide, with roughly 60 percent of them breeding in Iceland.

Project Puffin put a web camera on Maine's distant Matinicus Rock, home to about 300 pairs of puffins, in 2005 in an effort to stream video, Kress said. But the video was low-quality and worked only intermittently.

The latest project, with its high-definition cameras, gives views of puffins that were previously unavailable.

The project also includes a third camera on Seal Island that is aimed at common terns, and a fourth camera on another island elsewhere off Maine that's focused on a family of ospreys.

The project is funded by explore.org, a philanthropic organization in Santa Monica, Calif., and a division of the Annenberg Foundation.

Tom Pollak, executive producer of explore.org, said his organization has other cameras streaming video of a panda, a polar bear, a beluga whale and other animals, with the aim of having people "fall in love with the world."

"The feedback has been very positive," he said. "One of the best experiences we had was when we covered a polar bear migration in Manitoba and somebody commented, 'This is better than football.'"

NEW YORK (AP) ? A spokeswoman says "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek is "up and about" in a Los Angeles hospital as he recovers from a mild heart attack.

Sony Pictures Television spokeswoman Paula Askanas said Monday that Trebek is "in good spirits" while doctors complete their tests. She says he has been moved to a regular room.

The 71-year-old Trebek was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Saturday. He's expected to fully recover and be back at work when "Jeopardy!" resumes production for a new season in July.

Trebek was hospitalized for a heart attack in 2007. He has been hosting the popular quiz show for 28 years.

Brinkley settles latest skirmish with ex-husband

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) ? Supermodel and actress Christie Brinkley and her ex-husband Peter Cook have resolved their latest New York legal skirmish.

The New York Post (http://nyp.st/MvlVcD) reports Brinkley and Cook had been fighting over nasty email correspondence and expenses related to the care of their two children. They were due for a court fight on Long Island on Tuesday.

Brinkley posted a statement on her Facebook page on Monday confirming a deal had been reached. Cook tells the Post he feels great about the settlement.

The Hamptons couple divorced after a sensational high-profile trial in 2008 after he was caught having an affair with a teenager who worked at his architecture firm.

Saturday afternoon I opened my mailbox to find a notice from a former employer. My retirement plan had no declared beneficiary. The message I, a Euro-obsessed man, inferred: Sunday?s England-Italy match may kill you.

That?s also when it hit me: I?ve become far too obsessed with England-Italy. To verify, I looked back at all the hyperbole I?ve spewed since Tuesday:

• ?We?re probably in for one of the worst matches of the tournament, ??
• ?England and Italy is a dream matchup ? for people who are having trouble dreaming.?
• ?If you know anybody with an untreatable sleeping disorder, prop them up in front of a television at 2:45 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. The national teams of England and Italy will put forth their best attempt to cure world insomnia. It should be a banner day for the sleep disorder community.?
• ?I?d suggest brewing a lot of coffee for Sunday?s game, as you?re going to need help staying awake.?
• ?I hope they start with penalty kicks and save us two hours of ennui.?

It may be one of the tournament?s worst matches (who knows), but it?s still a Euro 2012 quarterfinal, and I don?t know about you, but my life isn?t so all-fire important that I can?t sit down and see if the thing can?t exceed my expectations. What else am I going to do? Live out my life in 120 character bursts?

And with that, here?s the playlist for Sunday?s quarterfinal, the 2:45 p.m. Eastern kickoff deciding who moves on to face Germany on Thursday.

1. (Didn?t used to be an) Empty tin

After one match, Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo looked like the tournaments best player. Then a slowed down a little versus Croatia, and when he didn?t recover against Ireland, it was obvious. The short turn around time is taking its toll.

Pirlo isn?t especially old. He?s only 33, but he has accumulated a tone of miles. It?s a bit strange that Mario Balotelli?s antics have been singled out ahead of a game that will feature John Terry. Balotelli?s portrayed as an impulsive, immature talent that exercises poor judgement, but compared to Terry?s knee to Alexei Sanchez?s back ahead of the Champions League final (which Terry had to miss, serving a red card suspension), Balotelli looks more?quixotic?than malicious.

Teams with Antonio Cassano, Balotelli forms one of the most volatile attacking tandems in tournament memory, but they?re not the only sparks in Sunday?s potential tinder box. Wayne Rooney entered this match serving a red card suspension, Ashley Cole?s off-field behavior has had it?s Balotellian turns, Thiago Motta (perhaps unfairly) has seen red in a Champions League semifinal, while no U.S. Men?s National Team fan need be reminded what Daniele de Rossi did to Brian McBride.

There are a number of flash points in Sunday?s game. Thankfully, none of them are truly likely to spark.

3. Wide open spaces

As similar as these teams are, one has wide play, and the other does not. Seems like a big difference, right? It will be, if England exploit it.

Italy provides no real help for their fullbacks (or wingbacks, if they play 3-5-2). The narrow midfield invites the opposition?s wide players onto Ignacio Abate and Federico Balzaretti, though none of their Group C opposition exploited it. Ireland doesn?t exploit anything, Spain play too narrow, while both Croatia fullbacks (Darijo Srna, Ivan Strnic) had good games against the Italians.

England should provide more of a challenge. On Italy?s right, the threat of the two Ashleys (Cole and Young) should be clear. Claudio Marchisio is going to have to help Abate. On the other flank, James Milner?s nowhere near as dangerous, but somebody?s going to have to get out and contest his crosses. And if Milner?s not out there, it?s going to be Theo Walcott ? an even more dangerous proposition.

4. A small wish for Wayne Rooney

It?s rare that a great player has such a glaring chance to define a match. Is Wayne Rooney a great player? I don?t really know. A lot of that depends on how you define great, but on Sunday he?s going to the be one, glaring, meaningful difference between two teams that couldn?t be more evenly matched.

Perhaps it?s an unfair expectation, but players who have blessed places in the starting XI are usually those who?ve shown they can do special things. And so when an England fan looks at Italy and looks at the Three Lions, it?s not without reason that they look at Rooney and think they can win. Italy?s just like us, except we have Wayne Rooney. They don?t.

And if England?s eliminated? How did that happen? We have Wayne Rooney. They don?t.

I don?t know if Wayne Rooney?s a great player, but some people might make their decisions tomorrow.

?During the nearly 15 years that Romney was actively involved in running Bain, a private equity firm that he founded, it owned companies that were pioneers in the practice of shipping work from the United States to overseas call centers and factories making computer components, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission,? the Post reported. ?While Bain was not the largest player in the outsourcing field, the private equity firm was involved early on, at a time when the departure of jobs from the United States was beginning to accelerate and new companies were emerging as handmaidens to this outflow of employment.?

Mitt Romney's five biggest liabilities as GOP nominee

The Romney camp fired back that the Post story was ?fundamentally flawed? because it didn?t differentiate between ?domestic outsourcing versus offshoring nor versus work done overseas to support US exports? ? a distinction hard to explain in a soundbite or on Twitter.

But it was clearly on the defensive as political opponents piled on.

?This simply doesn?t change the fact that Bain, under Romney, invested in companies whose sole purpose was to move jobs to other countries, directly countering the narrative that Romney has been trying to set,? declared the Think Progress liberal blog.

Within hours, the Obama campaign picked up on the story.

The last time the Mob dropped an album as a quartet was 1999's World Party, but now they are back.

"The Goodie Mob, we definitely are reunited. And we've been working on that album really vigorously and it's coming out very well," Cee Lo Green told MTV News while at a Los Angeles taping for TV Land's new sitcom "Soul Man." "I think people are going to be very pleased. You know our core audience and also this new audience that we are aspiring to acquire."

The comeback LP, which is titled Age Against the Machine, doesn't have a release date, but in April the group gave fans their first taste of the album when they performed their new single "Fight To Win" on "The Voice." The televised performance showed a Goodie Mob quite different from what their day-one fans may remember. While singing the motivational ode, Khujo, Gipp and T-Mo donned gold battle armor and matching capes, resembling a squad of triumphant Roman soldiers. The song has been catching on: It was chosen as the official theme for the 2012 NBA Playoffs and ran on television spots throughout the two-month sporting tournament.

It's been over a decade since we've seen Goodie together, but Cee Lo says it was bound to happen. "Well, you know, it was just a matter of time, it's very faithful and we're a family," he explained. "And you know we were never separate from each other completely. So our coming together after a 12-year hiatus is somewhat of a testament to our elasticity if you will. That's what I call it."

FACT CHECK: Romney, Obama on immigration plans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama flatly blamed Republicans on Friday for failing to support immigration reforms in the last few years.

But Obama didn't tell the whole story in his speech to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. His own Democratic colleagues had a hand in defeating one immigration bill two years ago.

A day earlier, presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney promised in a speech to the same group that he would ease the path to a green card, fix a complicated and cumbersome system to let farm workers into the United States and finish a high-tech fence along the Mexican border. He was glossing over how difficult some of those changes could be. Some already have been tried, with little or no success.

Here's a closer look at Obama's statement, Romney's assertions and how they match up with the facts:

OBAMA: "We should have passed the DREAM Act a long time ago. It was written by members of both parties. When it came up for a vote a year and a half ago, Republicans in Congress blocked it. The bill hadn't changed. The need hadn't changed. The only thing that had changed was politics."

THE FACTS: Five Senate Democrats voted against sending the DREAM Act to the Senate floor for full consideration. The bill would have created a path to citizenship for many young illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children. Last week, Obama announced plans to stop deporting illegal immigrants who would have qualified for the DREAM Act. The policy change does not include a path to citizenship.

ROMNEY: "As president, I'd reallocate green cards to those seeking to keep their families under one roof. And we will exempt from caps the spouses and minor children of legal permanent residents. And we will eliminate other forms of bureaucratic red tape that keep families from being together." He added: "And if you get an advanced degree here, we want you to stay here. So I'd staple a green card to the diploma of someone who gets an advanced degree in America."

THE FACTS: It's unclear whether Romney would have the authority if elected president to change the way green cards are issued, or whether he would need help from Congress. It is Congress that sets the annual limits for visas for foreigners who have advanced degrees in certain fields of science, math and other professions. Lately, Republicans and groups representing U.S. workers have blocked legislative attempts to increase those limits.

Advocates for immigration reform have long argued that the president can use executive powers to relax or change various immigration regulations. President Barack Obama has done that twice in the last year. First, he allowed prosecutors discretion to focus deportation of illegal immigrants on those with a criminal record or who otherwise pose a threat. Last week, he announced plans to stop deporting many young illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children who have not committed a crime in the U.S. and to grant them work permits.

Republicans have argued that Obama stretched his authority, but Romney seems to be suggesting he, too, could act alone to make broad changes.

And Romney's proposal for keeping educated foreigners in the U.S. isn't original. Obama, in a May 2011 immigration proposal, called for "encouraging foreign students to stay in the U.S. and contribute to our economy by stapling a green card to the diplomas" of those with advanced science, technology, engineering and math degrees.

ROMNEY: "I will work with states and employers to update our temporary worker visa program so that it meets our economic needs."

THE FACTS: Temporary and seasonal workers are considered a necessity for the U.S. agriculture industry, but importing legal workers has proved difficult. The Labor Department's visa program for temporary seasonal workers has long been viewed as costly, cumbersome and inefficient.

Several attempts to overhaul it that included a path to legalization for the workers have been blocked in Congress. Republicans have repeatedly said that any immigration bill offering a path to legalization would not win their support.

ROMNEY: "We should field enough Border Patrol agents, complete a high-tech fence and implement an improved exit verification system."

THE FACTS: Romney's plans don't take notice of what's already been done, including record-high staffing levels along the border and the failure of a Bush-era virtual fence plan.

The Border Patrol has more than 18,500 agents working on the southern border. In the year budget ending last September, agents apprehended about 340,000 illegal immigrants, the fewest in nearly 40 years ? an average of 18 apprehensions per agent. The decrease in apprehensions has been linked to a weak economy producing fewer jobs in the U.S. and to more law enforcement agents and technology being deployed along the border.

Under the Bush administration, the government built hundreds of miles of fencing along the Mexican border. A planned virtual fence was also started, but then scrapped by the Obama administration in 2010 after the project was deemed a failure. About 53 miles of virtual fencing is in place, at a cost of about $1 billion.

An exit verification system has been sought since after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, but efforts to build one have been repeatedly stymied, most often because of the projected costs. Earlier this year, John Cohen, deputy counterterrorism coordinator for the Homeland Security Department, told a congressional panel that the agency was finalizing plans for a biometric data system to track who leaves the country and when. He didn't give details.
