WARSAW, Poland (AP) -UEFA President Michel Platini says European Championship referees will stop matches if players suffer racial abuse from fans.
Platini says UEFA has empowered referees to "temporarily stop the game and finally cancel the game if this racism keeps rearing its head."
Concern about racism at Euro 2012 was fueled by a British television program showing discrimination at club matches in co-host nations Poland and Ukraine.
However, Platini says Italy forward Mario Balotelli will get a yellow card if he fulfills his threat to walk off in protest at abuse.
Platini says UEFA "always" supports referees and it's "not the player, Mr. Balotelli, who is in charge of the situation."
UEFA referees director Pierluigi Collina says his officials "know what they have to do."
