>>> breaking news tonight out of west virginia , where a fiery explosion is the latest reminder that when you have to live near dangerous materials, dangerous things can sometimes happen. tonight, the problem is a gas pipeline in west virginia . tom costello has been watching it for us from our washington bureau all day. tom, good evening.
>> reporter: hi, brian. the ntsb is on its way to west virginia to assist in this investigation. witnesses say the explosion was so loud, they thought a plane had crashed and then the constant roar of an open 20-inch gas transmission line with flames shooting 75 feet into the air. it took firefighters some time to get into the area because of the intensity of the fire. and they have been concerned about the possibility of another explosion as well. nearby schools were told to keep kids inside and four to five homes were damaged or destroyed. this fire was so intense, it actually cooked a portion of i-77. that's major highway that runs up to cleveland, and a fiber optic phone line was also damaged. that affects phone service to several states. several people were treated for smoke inhalation but no serious injuries, no deaths and everyone is accounted for tonight, brian.
